JOHNNY JANE IN FRUITA APRIL 14-16; DENVER FRINGE FESTIVAL, JUNE 8-11; CEDAREDGE & CARBONDALE IN AUGUST

Zephyr Stage presents its new, original production, JOHNNY JANE, written by Finn Benham, Kim Nuzzo and Valerie Nuzzo, April 14-16, 2023 at the Fruita United Methodist Church, at 405 East Aspen Ave.  Shows on Friday and Saturday begin at 7:30 p.m., with the Sunday matinee at 3 p.m. Tickets are $12 at the door. The production features Kim Nuzzo as a heroin-addicted fallen angel; Finn Benham, the angel’s caretaker, is a trans youth coming to terms with his violent past; and Valerie Nuzzo is a mysterious visitor bent on revenge. The play explores identity, forgiveness, love and othering, and contains adult language and themes, including drug use.

The play was first performed in Palisade in January. The production has since been accepted into the Denver Fringe Festival, where the Fruita-based company will be performing the show in the RiNo Art District in Denver, June 8-11. Zephyr Stage then takes Johnny Jane to Thunder River Theatre in Carbondale, Aug. 5-6 and on to the Grand Mesa Arts & Events Center in Cedaredge, Aug. 12-13.

Zephyr Stage was founded in Fruita in 2017. The company specializes in original productions, and has taken shows to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and toured across the U.S. Past productions include ART by Yasmina Reza, Multitudes: An Evening with Walt Whitman by Valerie and Kim Nuzzo, Eleemosynary by Lee Blessing, Gilgamesh and Enkidu by Zephyr Stage and Principle of Uncertainty by Andrea Brunello.

Virtual Screening: Zephyr Stage’s Poe-Mythology (A Benefit)

The actors of Fruita-based Zephyr Stage at Cavalcade were thrilled to be invited by the Geeks of the Grand Valley to take part in The Poe Project, Oct. 1-7.

The company’s performances are usually live, but at this time, for the safety of their audience and performers, they will be sharing their work online. Three Zephyr Stage artists, Raquel Benham, Kim Nuzzo and Valerie Nuzzo, have each created multiple entries in an original film called “Poe-mythology: nothing stays buried.”

Entries include several of Poe’s poems set to original music by Raquel Benham. Don’t miss The Raven featuring Kim Nuzzo, and a retelling of The Tell-Tale Heart by guest artist K.L. Benham. Our guide through the presentation is poet and playwright Valerie Nuzzo channeling poet Ida Hilda Gruffershaugen who channels Lizzie “never Elizabeth” Doten who channels Edgar “Fast Eddie” Allan Poe.

Zephyr Stage Artistic Director Valerie Nuzzo said, “The film is free to watch. If people enjoy it, we hope they’ll share it with friends and family, and if folks can help at this time, we hope they’ll donate to Cavalcade in Fruita.” Cavalcade is an all-volunteer nonprofit performing arts venue created by Fruita residents dedicated to giving the community a unique place for all ages to experience and participate in high quality live music, plays, poetry, comedy, and - above all - a place to be inspired, learn and have fun!
